Sapphire Series 2018 Round Two Preview

Sapphire Series 2018 Round Two Preview

We’re excited to be hosting the second round of the Sapphire Series welcoming all of Division 2A for a cross-conference round this Saturday at George Salter Academy, West Bromwich, B70 9UW. This tournament is sponsored by Atlas Copco Bolting Solutions.

Game 1: Sandwell Steelers vs Wembley Stallions

We will be facing the Wembley Stallions first in what should be an exciting match-up. We played the Stallions two years ago in #Sapphire16 in 5v5. We unfortunately lost both of these games to a well-drilled Wembley side with an 18-6 defeat followed by an 8-0 defeat. (Gordon Dedman)

Wembley have been on the up and up since then securing the Conference Title for their South Division last season, so this game will be no mean feat. Wembley are a physical team with a very strong run game. However our defence so far this season has conceded zero rushing touchdowns so this should make for some thrilling football!

We can’t count out Wembley’s pass game either with experienced QB Emma Arnold leading the team in her third straight season with the Stallions. Along with some rookie standouts at WR, this makes Wembley’s offence a substantial threat. Although, our pick-loving safety Alicia Marcella loves a legitimate passing threat so fingers crossed for some interceptions this round!

Wembley’s defence is also pretty stellar, defensive end Demi Adesanya caused FIVE SAFETIES in one game in the last round. She is definitely one for our OL to keep an eye on… Speaking of our offensive line, they have set themselves some tough goals for the season, aiming for zero sacks all Series. QBs have promised ice cream and steak dinners if they succeed. With food and unicorn points on the table, let’s hope they are successful!

Game 2: Sandwell Steelers vs Cardiff Valkyries

After the Wembley game, we will be playing the lovely Cardiff Valkyries. Cardiff are the new kids on the block in this Division and we played them twice last season in 5’s, winning both games. Cardiff showed great improvement in our second match up with what turned out to be a high scoring game ending 34-26.

Cardiff’s QB Kira Walker will be going into her second season with the Valkyries. She has shown a lot of potential so far in this position and is definitely one to keep an eye on as Cardiff continue to develop. In our last matchup, Cardiff adjusted to our run-focused defence by throwing a lot of deep balls. Having learned our lesson, our defence will definitely be keeping an eye on that deep zone this time around!

Stepping into the role of QB for us this round is the swiss army knife of football, Sydney Green. She is a versatile player, seen all over the field. We expect she will be playing both sides this Saturday too.

While we intend to go out and try to get the W this weekend, we are definitely looking forward to playing with this great bunch of ladies again!

Come down and support us at our home tournament this Saturday games starting @1pm! #SteelerFamilia
