The Sandwell Steelers Women’s programme are delighted to confirm they will be competing in this year’s newly formed Division 2A North Conference for Sapphire 2018, alongside familiar foes, Teesside Steelers and Chester Romans.
In recent months the Women’s programme have been hard at work recruiting players and coaches to help push on, especially with the transition to 7-a-side football. The programme has retained over 85% of players from last season, which puts us in good stead. The Women’s programme have also had some new recruits and welcomed back Sydney Green to the linebacker core following her stint over at Hertfordshire Tornadoes. With these new additions, and our evermore attitude towards recruitment, the programme is in a good place for the upcoming season.
The Women’s programme have also added to the existing coaching staff, by bringing on board Jay Alexander as offensive coordinator, Adam Bates as defensive line coach, Shane Green as linebacker coach and Lewis Horton as running back coach. As the Steelers pride themselves on family, the adult team where more than happy to assist in ensuring every position had a designated coach to help the women’s players develop.
With the increase in players on the field, the playbook has been apated to accommodate said players. Considering there has been little change, veterans and rookies alike are itching for their chance to make a play this season. It has been mentioned time and time again, that the most exciting new feature is the ability to blitz.
Whilst on the other side of the ball, the Offence, has found it much harder with the transition. With the addition of an offensive line, this now creates gaps for the running backs to work with, something that if not well-drilled can go very wrong. The position of quarterback has become much more athletic with the option for keep plays adding another option for the offence to move the ball.
In order to be ready for the upcoming season, the Women’s programme have taken part in two pre-season friendlies. Back in November the Derby Braves hosted a scrimmage, which gave the programme invaluable experience, which allowed us to identify our weaknesses and strengths. The second pre-season game was also a scrimmage against the Birmingham Lions last weekend. Much like the Braves, the Lions were gracious hosts, and allowed us to maximise reps to both sides of the ball giving us a great footing for us to take into the season. The players have been through the film of the games, allowing for personal development.
With a couple of games behind us we are going into the season confident and can’t wait to start the Sapphire Series! Due to some geographical luck, this season the Women’s programme will be hosting two tournaments. The first being on 24th February, this is a cross-conference round hosting all teams in Division 2A, with the second being the National Finals Tournament on 17th March.
It’s at this moment we’d like to thank Atlas Copco Bolting Solutions, our tournament sponsors. Without their continued sponsorship, most of this wouldn’t be possible.
