The Sandwell Steelers Women’s programme is only weeks away from their first game of the new Sapphire Series, and we managed to catch up with Head Coach Pete Wilson for his verdict on the upcoming season.
SS: Hey Pete, itas brilliant to have you back for another season, how do you feel about being the Head Coach?
PW: When I started as a Steeler on the second ever training session, I always felt home and loved the sport. When I was given the opportunity to coach the Womenas team O Line (centreas) I jumped at the chance. When the last HC left halfway through the season two years ago I applied for the position and have never looked back. Watching the girls improve week by week makes me a very proud Head Coach.
SS: With you being HC, who will be taking on the mantles of OC & DC?
PW: After being made the HC for a second year now, I have given Sam Rafferty the responsibility of being my Defensive coordinator, who will be assisted by Peter Roden. My Offensive coordinator is Ben Bray who will be assisted by Emma Wilkinson who has a season ending injury.
SS: Having played in the Adultas game for many seasons, what makes the Womenas game different?
PW: When you play in the Adultas game, every game is 11 men on 11 men. However, with the womenas game there are two different series meaning different amounts of players on the field at any time. In the 5v5 game, all players are eligible to have the ball passed to them.
SS: How have you got the team preparing for the new season, are you looking to play a particular way, or keep things balanced?
PW: With our team being stronger than most and having a rookie QB, we will mostly be going for power running. But with vets stepping up and rookies making a big impact, we are looking forward to having some fun with our playbook this year.
SS: So far the Womenas team has gone from strength-to-strength, what can we expect from them in the upcoming season?
PW: The first season of the womenas team we went 1-7 and last year we went 4-4, so improving on that to have a winning season this year is our main goal. With the girls going into this season more focused than ever, I expect this year to be their best.
SS: And finally, do you have any further comments on the upcoming season?
PW: We have had a few rookies joining us every week of the year so far, so welcoming them into our #SteelerFamilia has been great. We are looking forward to more improvements and we are very excited to be participating in the upcoming Sapphire Series. As always we will continue to hit hard and have fun!
